NHCS Advisory Council on the Education of Children with Special Needs Visits New Hanover High School


The NHCS Advisory Council on the Education of Children with Special Needs visited New Hanover High School on May 17, 2013.  New Hanover High School shared information about the many mentoring opportunities available there, including peer mentoring.  All students entering NHHS, join the Freshman Academy as a means to support their transition to high school.  Students in the NHHS Business Law class have adopted the disability awareness campaign, "Spread the Word to End the Word". 
 
Exceptional Children's Liaison, Anne Goins, presented information on school assignment processes in New Hanover County.

NHCS Advisory Council on the Education of Children with Special Needs Visits Murrayville Elementary School

On Friday, April 19, 2013, the NHCS Advisory Council on the Education of Children with Special Needs visited Murrayville Elementary School.  Principal, Mrs. Dominowski and staff presented information about Murrayville and their programming for students with disabilities.

Betsy Stanwood, Transition Liaison, continued her presentation from the March 15, 2013 meeting on Course of Study Selection for students with disabilities. She announced that the next NHCS Transition Fair will be on October 29, 2013.

NHCS Advisory Council on the Education of Children with Special Needs Visits Gregory School of Math, Science and Technology

On March 15, 2013, the NHCS Advisory Council on the Education of Children with Special Needs meet at Gregory School of Math, Science and Technology.  Principal, Crystal Holland and staff presented information about the unique programming offered at Gregory and information about instructional services for students with disabilities.

Betsy Stanwood and Cindy Booth, NHCS Liaisons, presented the special topic: Course of Study Selection Process and provided a link to the NHCS Transition Wiki resource page.

NHCS Advisory Council Visits Child Development Center

On February 15, 2013 the council visited the Child Development Center.  Director, Nancy Haddock presented information about the CDC and its mission to serve young children with special needs.  Pre-School Liaison, Matt Oakley, introduced himself to the council and his role in New Hanover County Schools.

The special topic was presented by Susan Cole. She discussed Bullying Prevention and Student Rights in NHCS.

Advisory Council Visits Rachel Freeman Elementary School

On Friday, December 14, 2012, the NHCS Advisory Council on Education for Children with Special Needs visited Rachel Freeman School of Engineering.  Mr. Pearson, Principal, Mrs. Nalepa, Assistant Principal and Exceptional Children's staff members presented demographic and general information about Freeman's focus on engineering throughout the curriculum, including students with exceptionalities.  Mr. Pearson shared valuable information about the unique technology and personnel resources available to advance the development of 21st century learners at Rachel Freeman.

Cindy Booth, Assistive Technology and EC Liaison, presented on the special topic for the meeting: "Assistive Technology in NHCS".  She discussed available resources for students and processes for identifying and providing assistive technology to students with special needs in New Hanover County Schools.
