New Hanover County Schools to Be Recognized
by the NC Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Initiative
Eight New Hanover County Schools have been selected to be recognized in the North Carolina Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) Initiative Annual Recognition. The recognitions will be a part of the NC Department of Public Instruction’s 60th Conference on Exceptional Children, held at the Koury Convention Center, Greensboro, NC, from November 1-3, 2010. Each school will be presented with banners, which will be hung in their schools announcing their accomplishment.
Dorothy B. Johnson Pre-K Center and Sunset Park Elementary School are being recognized as Model Schools. A NC PBIS Model School has an administration actively using the PBIS system and it has a PBIS Team in place, which meets monthly. They also have identified an In-School PBIS Coach and the school has completed PBIS Training Modules 1 and 2.
Forest Hills Global Elementary School and Gregory School of Science, Math & Technology earned the Green Ribbon title. PBIS Green Schools have completed Module I team training and begun PBIS implementation. They have attained at least a Level I on the Implementation Inventory and 80% total on the School-wide Evaluation Tool (SET).
Alderman Elementary, Pine Valley Elementary, Rachel Freeman School of Engineering and Wrightsboro Elementary have earned designation as Exemplar Schools. Exemplar schools have completed requirements for Green Ribbon and Model Schools and have completed all three team training Modules. They have scored a Level 3 or higher on the Implementation Inventory and 95% total on the SET. At least two consecutive years of required behavioral, attendance, and academic data shows improvement, and they have documented at least one additional data element that they are tracking as a team.
PBIS is an effective and proactive process for improving social competence and academic achievement for all students.
