Advisory Council Visits Rachel Freeman Elementary School

On Friday, December 14, 2012, the NHCS Advisory Council on Education for Children with Special Needs visited Rachel Freeman School of Engineering.  Mr. Pearson, Principal, Mrs. Nalepa, Assistant Principal and Exceptional Children's staff members presented demographic and general information about Freeman's focus on engineering throughout the curriculum, including students with exceptionalities.  Mr. Pearson shared valuable information about the unique technology and personnel resources available to advance the development of 21st century learners at Rachel Freeman.

Cindy Booth, Assistive Technology and EC Liaison, presented on the special topic for the meeting: "Assistive Technology in NHCS".  She discussed available resources for students and processes for identifying and providing assistive technology to students with special needs in New Hanover County Schools.

Advisory Council Visits Alderman Elementary School


The NHCS Advisory Council on the Education of Children with Special Needs visited Alderman 
Elementary School on Friday, November 16, 2012.  Principal, Bob Maxey presented demographic information, noting that Alderman is a school with one of the smallest class sizes in New Hanover County Schools.  Mr. Maxey shared that Alderman is New Hanover County Schools first "Connected School" (E. Perry Good) and that he and the staff have seen success in the first year of programming implementation.

Dr. Kerri Wright, NHCS Autism Liaison, presented the special topic for the day: "Advocacy and Self-Awareness".  


Advisory Council Visits Winter Park Elementary School

On October 19, 2012 the NHCS Advisory Council on Education for Children with Special Needs visited Winter Park Elementary School.  Monica Goza, Principal and Exceptional Children staff members presented information about Winter Park's one hundred year history, their overall school philosophy of inclusion and development of intrinsic motivation, and programming for students with special needs at Winter Park.
Sheryl Ewing and Teresa Mebane from Family Support Network presented on the special topic:  "Education and Information on Parent's Rights and Disabilities."
