Advisory Council visits Virgo Middle School

On January 15, 2010, the NHCS Advisory Council visited Virgo Middle School. Mr. Donald Cummings and his special education staff began the meeting with an overview of the special education programs at Virgo. Mr. Cummings then led the Council on a tour of the facilities while highlighting the special education classrooms. A thank you to Mr. Cummings and his staff for their informative presentation and school tour. The NHCS Advisory Council meeting is scheduled for February 19, 2010 at Williston Middle School.

NHCS APE Teacher Recognized at State and Regional Level

Ann Hughes, NHCS Adaptive Physical Education Teacher, was recently honored as the 2009 Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the Physical Education Association (PEA) of the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NCAAHPERD). A former professor of Ms. Hughes states, " This award is reflective of Ann's outstanding qualities as a professional physical educator and her creativity in finding ways to adapt physical activities and encourage inclusive opportunities for students with special needs." In addition to her state recognition, Ms.Hughes has be honored as the winner of the Southern District (13 states from Texas to Virginia) APE TOY Award from AAHPERD and is now eligible to compete  for the national APE TOY Award. Congratulations Ann and good luck at the national competition!

NHCS visits Emma B. Trask Middle School

On Friday, November 20, 2009 the NHCS Advisory Council on Special Education made it's third school-site visit of the 2009-2010 school year to Emma B. Trask Middle School. Principal, Sharon Dousharm, and her special education staff gave a informative presentation and school-site tour of the special education programs currently at Trask Middle School. Cindy Szulewski-Booth, NHCS Assistive Technology Specialist, presented information to the Advisory Council on the assistive technology available to NHCS students, teachers, and special education programs. The Advisory Council would like to thank Trask Middle School and Cindy Szulewski-Booth for their time and effort in educating the NHCS Advisory Council on their impressive programs.

2009-2010

The NHCS Advisory Council would like to congratulate Laura Bullard for receiving the 2009-2010 Middle School Educator of the Year. Additionally, Laura was recognized as this year's NHCS Teacher of Excellence by the NC Department of Public Instruction Exceptional Children Division at its annual conference. Laura Bullard is a special education teacher at Trask Middle School. Congratulations Laura!

NHCS Schools Recognized - NC Positve Behavior Support Initiative

Four New Hanover County Schools to Be Recognized
by the NC Positive Behavior Support Initiative

Four New Hanover County Schools have been selected to be recognized in the North Carolina Positive Behavior Support Initiative Annual Recognition. Wrightsboro, Pine Valley and Blair elementary schools are all being recognized as model schools. Additionally, the New Hanover County Schools Pre-K has been selected as a Green Ribbon School.

A NC PBS Model School has an administration actively using the PBS system and it has a PBS Team in place which meets monthly. They also have identified an In-School PBS Coach and the school has completed PBS Training Modules 1 and 2. A school designated as a Green Ribbon School has implemented all of the same elements and has completed PBS Training Module 1.

This year’s PBS Recognition will be a part of the NC Department of Public Instruction’s 59^th Conference on Exceptional Children and will take place on Monday, November 2, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. at the Koury Convention Center located at 3121 High Point Road in Greensboro. At the conference, each school will receive recognition banners that can be hung in their schools announcing their accomplishment. 

Positive Behavioral Support Programs are a way to impact the learning environments in the schools in order to support high student performance and to reduce behavioral problems.
